Artists like Rembrandt used heavy Tenebrism, a technique intentional at incorporating violent contrasts of light and dark in their artwork. Viewed in completion, all the shadows, light, and contrast blend together seamlessly within his artwork; revealing the full intended scene....

But, say for example, you only focused on one tiny grid of let's say “The Calling of St. Matthew” or “The Night Watch”, you would be limiting your scope of view to only the messy parts…

Only after taking a few, intentional, steps back… would you be able to marvel at the full masterpiece.

How often are we all guilty of solely focusing on the “tenebrism” in our own daily lives? Isn’t it easy to get sucked up into bad news? Stress? Or hyper-concentrate on all the “errands” or “to do lists” we scramble to get done? –production numbers, quotas, demands, responsibilities, and obligations… How often have we forgotten to step back and appreciate the entire canvas of our own lives?

I did a lot of reflection on my drive home after spending the afternoon with Cherese and Joshua. I pondered how one simple photography inquiry becomes a gateway into the lives and hearts of so many. How Cherese's initial inquiry for an engagement session eventually led me on a timeline of photographing their wedding and maternity. A simple inquiry that gave me the opportunity of leaving behind a legacy through image: Photos of their milestones and celebrations to be framed and canvased on their walls, and memories to be made into albums...

Every moment is like a brushstroke, painting a picture of a legacy left behind long after we are gone.
